Temple Health seeks a collaborative and nationally accomplished academic surgeon to serve as its next Chair and System Chief, Department of Surgery. This is a unique opportunity to advance surgery clinical, educational and research programs across an integrated health system and research-intensive university in the midst of unprecedented momentum.
The Chair of the Department of Surgery directs nearly 50 faculty members and more than 70 professional and support personnel within its nine clinical divisions (Trauma & Surgical Critical Care, Burn, Cardiovascular, Vascular, Plastic & Reconstructive, General Minimally Invasive & Bariatric, Colorectal, Abdominal Organ Transplant, and Surgical Oncology). Outpatient clinical services are provided in 10 unique locations, with over 35,000 visits per year. Surgical volume totals nearly 6,000 cases, and inpatient discharges are approximately 40,000 annually.
Major hospital sites for surgical clinical and educational activities include Temple University Hospital, Temple Hospital Jeanes Campus, and Temple Fox Chase Cancer Center. Department faculty members are Temple Faculty Practice Plan or Fox Chase Medical Group members. The chair directly supervises the division chiefs and clinical surgical program directors and serves as the primary liaison with LKSOM, TUHS, Temple University Hospital, and its affiliates. The Department of Surgery supervises nearly 70 general surgery residents and 11 surgical fellows in Plastics, Breast, Surgical Oncology, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery, as well as Surgical Critical Care. The Department of Surgery also coordinates the core surgery and surgical clinical rotations for all LKSOM medical students.
Founded in 1901 as Pennsylvania’s first co-educational medical school, the Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM) has attained a national reputation for training humanistic clinicians and biomedical scientists, and as one of the most diverse medical schools in the country. In over a dozen research centers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and Fox Chase Cancer Center, Temple researchers are speeding the transformation of fundamental scientific discoveries into practical therapies with a common objective to improve the level of human health. LKSOM partners closely with Temple University Health System. Together, they comprise 1,550+ physicians and scientists and have garnered national recognition for outstanding programs including organ transplantation (heart, lung, liver, kidney/pancreas); pulmonary and thoracic medicine (#1 lung transplant center in the U.S. by volume); cardiovascular medicine; neurosciences; orthopedics and sports medicine; gastroenterology; and cancer.
The incoming Chair and System Chief will have multiple opportunities to make an impact, including growing clinical programs, translational research programs and facilitating integration across the health system. The new Chair and System Chief will be a visionary and strategic leader who will promote a strong culture of institutional stewardship throughout Temple Health. They will possess prior leadership and program development experience in an academic environment with demonstrated fiscal and administrative responsibility. The successful candidate will also have documented success in the clinical, education, and research spheres and proven capabilities in strategic planning, faculty recruitment and development, operations, resource allocation and related decision-making.
